Skating Success

Congratulations to Sam Portch who represented New Zealand in the 2016 Speed Skating Oceania Championships in Timaru over Easter. Sam joined skaters from Australia, USA and Italy over a wide range of ages - with his age group being the biggest. Sam placed 4th in the 10k Points/Elimination race and 4th in the 42k Marathon (with a personal best of 1:21:13). This is a wonderful achievement in a very competitive field. Well done, Sam.

Athletic Sports 2016

On Friday 11 March the full school attended the annual Awatapu College Athletics Sports held at the Massey Athletics Track.

Despite the cold, there was some fierce competition among the age groups. Special congratulations to Noah and Zia Macdermid who broke the Intermediate Boys 1500m and Senior Girls 1500m records, respectively. Maori Connections

On 22 February, Awatapu College students attended a special assembly held by International Maori performer, Bruce Simpson.

Bruce Simpson, a former Awatapu College student, spoke of his extraordinary career showcasing traditional Maori culture across the globe. Students were inspired as he described how his passion for Maori culture has lead him on this incredible journey. Career highlights include performing in front of the Queen and Prince Charles, and performing during the past three Rugby World Cup tournaments.

We are extremely proud of his achievements and grateful for the opportunity to hear of his success.
