Cultural Activities
Music
Awatapu College offers an extensive range of musical opportunities for students at all levels. Tuition is available in orchestral instruments and in piano, guitar, drums and vocals. Classes are held on a weekly basis and students are released from timetabled classes as necessary. Music is offered as a curriculum subject through to Year 13. The music suite includes two classrooms, features a large rehearsal space and several practice rooms. Our musicians regularly perform for school occasions, community groups and in regional events.
Performing Arts
Each year a major production is staged in which a large number of students participate in acting, singing, dancing and a show band. Students also play a key part in the technical production of the show, including stage makeup, lighting, sound, set construction and painting. Students also have the opportunity to be involved in Soirees, Theatresports, Shakespeare Competitions and Dance NZ Made.
Debating
Students at both Junior and Senior levels have the opportunity to compete in debating competitions.
Art
The strength of Art in the College is reflected in the large numbers of students who select Art courses and in the high level of achievement they obtain. Our teaching staff are practising artists in their specialist fields. They cover multiple art disciplines including painting, print making, design and photography as well as art history. The school features several murals created by students and host art exhibitions in which students display their best art pieces as a celebration and culmination of a year's work.
Year 10 Camps
Students have the opportunity to select from a range of activities which may include: mountain biking, sailing, fishing, tramping (some of the camps offered). Camps are offered during Term Four.
