Academic Badge Ceremony

During our full school assembly on Friday 22 March, a number of students were awarded Academic Badges in recognition of their outstanding NCEA success in 2018. 

We had a number of students who were awarded Merit and Excellence endorsed certificates. This means they achieved at least 50 credits at Merit and/or Excellence. The number receiving certificates has increased over the last few years which is very encouraging.

World Vision Youth ConferenceYouthConference

On Friday 15 March, seven senior students represented Awatapu College at the World Vision Youth Conference held in Wellington. The event focuses on social injustice, choice and leadership, and empowers secondary school students to advocate for and lead social change in their local and global communities.

PTA News

Thank you to the Awatapu College PTA who have agreed to contribute $1000 towards our Goldie Draws and $1500 to Seeking Success. These generous donations are welcomed by the College and we thank the PTA for their ongoing support.

Manawatu Sportsman of the YearPeter

Congratulations to former student, Peter Michael, who was named Manawatu Sportsman of the Year 2019 for his speed skating successes.

Peter competed in three events at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games held in Pyeong Chang, Korea, with some fantastic results: 4th place in the men's 5000m, 4th place in the team pursuit and 14th place in the 1500m.

The Central Energy Trust Manawatu Sport Awards is the regions premier event for recognising the highest achieving sporting athletes, teams, coaches and administrators for the 2018 calendar year. Congratulations to all finalists and winners.

Pūhoro Scholarship

Congratulations to Malachy Kingi-McCavana who has been selected to attend an overseas experience to Taiwan and Singapore as part of the Pūhoro STEM Academy. The experience aims to inspire, connect and expose senior Pūhoro STEM Academy students to the dynamic STEM horizons of the world whilst providing an opportunity to engage with leaders in health technology, digital technology and computer engineering. 

This year’s excursion will connect fifteen Academy students with consecutive experiences in Taiwan and then onto Singapore through connections held with the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan, Environmental Science and Research (ESR) and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE).

Malachy was selected from a substantial number of applicants from across the Year 13 cohort. Congratulations, Malachy. Pūhoro ki te hoe!!

Swimming ChampSam

Congratulations to Sam Brown for his remarkable swimming successes.

In early January, Sam competed in the NZ Open Water Championships held in Lake Taupo, placing 10th overall in the 2.5km swim for the 13-14 year old age group. Sam went on to medal at both the Manawatu Age Group and Manawatu Opens Swimming Competitions, winning a gold medal in the Men's 200m Open Butterfly. Sam also represented Manawatu at NZ Div II competition in Dunedin recently, where he qualified for and competed in 9 events.

Well done, Sam! You should be incredibly proud of your achievements!
