Pūhoro Maori STEM Scholarship

Congratulations to Shelby Nicholson and Ruairi Daniela who have been selected to attend a fully funded trip to Houston, USA, as part of the Pūhoro Maori STEM Academy run by Massey University. These students were selected from over 70 applicants and were chosen due to their commitment to the programme, their outstanding grades, and positive community involvement.

This trip will take place in the April school holidays and will give the students a chance to explore NASA, speak to Mana Vautier (a New Zealand Astronaut) and watch the Vex Robotics World Championships. This is an amazing opportunity that both Shelby and Ruairi are very deserving of. Congratulations to both of these students and also a big thank you to Massey University and their sponsors for making this fantastic trip a reality.

Red Cross - Pathways to Settlement

Red Cross is the primary provider of support for families settling in Palmerston North under the refugee settlement programme. Red Cross currently settle 165 individuals (approximately 40 households) - many of whom are young people or children.

Red Cross are currently seeking willing volunteers to join their team and make a difference as a refugee support volunteer. Volunteers are essential for this programme as they provide much of the practical and social support that enables these families to get to know our city and to cope with the day to day tasks that may be challenging to them. For more information about the programme, please read the following information sheet

Volunteers are needed to help families arriving on 27 April 2018 build new lives in our community. All volunteers will take part in a comprehensive training course, starting on 13 March 2018.

If you would like to become a refugee support volunteer or would like further information, please contact Michelle Thomson, Red Cross Volunteer Trainer/Team Leader, by phoning 06 356 8152 or emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. Awatapu College Board of Trustees Vacancy

The Awatapu College Board of Trustees are looking to co-opt a member(s) to join our Board, due to the recent resignation of a Board member who has moved away from the Manawatu.

The area(s) that we would like to co-opt support in is around Maori / Pasifika achievement and engagement to enhance our academic outcomes for all students; in particular, for those who identify as Maori / Pasifika.  Likewise, with a number of property projects about to begin, a candidate with experience in building and project management would be a useful addition to our existing Board.

Expression of interests, clearly outlining what you could offer the Board in its governance, should be sent to the Board Secretary, Elizabeth Shand, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 4pm Wednesday 14 March 2018. We will be looking to make a decision at our Board meeting on 14 March 2018.
