Pasifika Fusion

This year the Pasifika Fusion Competition was held on Wednesday, 26 and Thursday, 27 July at the Regent Theatre. The event saw schools from around the Manawatu showcase their many and varied talents. 

Awatapu students participated in many of the categories including Wearable Arts, Speech, Talent, and Cultural Performance. Some of the highlights included Newdili Aiiloilo’s vocal solo in the talent category. Newdili impressed the judges with a beautiful rendition of an original Samoan song. Another highlight was the success of our orators, Mosiah Igatia and Teuila Nosa. Teuila was awarded first place in the English speech category, and Mosiah was awarded first place in the Niuean speech category and second place in the English speech category.

This year the Cultural group was larger than previous years with 32 students taking part in both traditional and contemporary performances. These students spent countless hours learning and perfecting dances from a range of Pasifika cultures. A big thank you to friends and family who came to support them, and to Mr Filipo for his time and effort working with the group.

Girls In Tech

Congratulations to Nakita Clare who won a sponsored place at the GirlsInnov8 Camp held at St Cuthbert’s College in Auckland during the school holidays. The camp offered young women a hands on experience in IT and Technology. Nakita took part in a variety of activities such as app development, laser cutting and computer science. The camp also offered her the opportunity to meet and talk with inspirational women who have built a career in Technology. 

Toward the end of Term Two, a group of students were also invited to attend the UCOL Tech Shadow Day. The day provided the young women an opportunity to experience what working in the tech sector could be like and to encourage them onto pathways that would lead into tech sector roles. The girls spent part of the day with women in tech occupations around Palmerston North and also visited the following businesses: Nodero Ltd, Massey University, NewEra Ltd, and Blacksheep Design. This was a fabulous opportunity and gave the students an excellent insight into a variety of different careers.

Arts Week 2017

In the last week of Term Two, students enjoyed yet another successful Arts Week. Events included the Lip Sync Battle, the Arts Week Soiree, Fantasy Face Painting and the House Dance Off. The highlight of the week was the Soiree on Wednesday, 5 and Thursday, 6 July. It is always so rewarding to see students hard work and talent shine through on stage. Thank you to friends and family who came to watch the performances. A big thank you also to the Performing Arts, Music and Art Departments for their work organising the events.

M3S Competition

On Thursday, 30 June six Year 12 students took part in the Massey Maths and Statistics (M3S) competition. The students participated in teams of three to work through the difficult questions involving logical steps and problem solving skills without calculators. Well done to all those involved. 

Open Night 2017

Awatapu College U15 vs Australia U15

Toward the end of Term Two, the Awatapu College U15 Rugby team were invited to play the touring Australian Hawkesbury Valley Junior team as part of an exchange organised by the Rugby Institute. The team played fiercely throughout the game and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially getting to run out and play on the field at the Massey University Rugby Institute.
