Congratulations to Briar Beals on her outstanding judo achievements this year. In August Briar competed in the North Wellington Judo Champs in Palmerston North, winning two golds, one silver and one bronze. She then competed in the North Island Judo Champs in Auckland, winning a silver and bronze. Well done!
Earlier this term, a number of students competed at the 2019 TSNZ Challenge Smallbore Rifle Target Shooting Competition. The Awatapu #1 Target Shooting Team (Xavier Hintz, Blake Feekery and Cameron Churchouse) came 20th in the Boys’ Grade and the Awatapu #2 Target Shooting Team (Thomas Burgess, Brodie Schulze and Rowan Woods) came 17th in the Mixed Grade.
In their individual pursuits, Xavier Hintz, Blake Feekery and Cameron Churchouse competed in the Boys’ Individual Grade, and Thomas Burgess, Casey Bowater, Haylie Whittaker, Stevan Hamblyn and Rowan Woods competed in the Rest Individual Grade. Well done to everyone who participated in this event.
Further congratulations to Xavier Hintz who was selected in the Manawatu Rifle Shooting Team and won the Regional Rifle Shooting Competition.
Congratulations to Lucy Scrivener who won the Manawatu Secondary Schools Creative Wood Skills Competition organised by UCOL and hosted by the Square Edge. Lucy designed and produced a river resin slab coffee table complete with LED lighting. This creative piece of furniture would not be out of place in a corporate office or foyer. This is the 3rd year in a row Lucy has gained success in this competition. In 2017 Lucy was highly commended and in 2018 she was awarded 1st equal. Well done!
Congratulations to Kyann Williams who was selected in the New Zealand International Biology Olympiad programme and awarded a bronze certificate. The programme involves completing a series of Mastering Biology assignments, Education Perfect tests, and discussions in a closed Facebook group.
In the last week of Term Three, 23 students set off on the Snow Experience Camp. We arrived on a sunny Sunday, full of excitement and anticipation, particularly those that had never been to the mountain before. Unfortunately weather conditions deteriorated over the next two days, and although we were able to spend some time on the mountain, the comfort of the lodge with its warm fire was more appealing for most. On the final day, after an overnight storm and a frozen road, students caught the big four-wheel drive buses down the mountain to return a little earlier than expected. What an adventure! Meals to cook for large numbers! Fires to light for the first time! Wood to bring in from a half buried wood shed! It certainly was a Snow Experience Camp and one to remember!
