School Closure Update

Repair works have been completed and normal timetable will resume Wednesday 12 November 2020.

School Closed - Tuesday 11 February 2020

Please note, the school will be closed for all staff and students on Tuesday 11 February 2020.

This is due to a burst mains pipe on the College grounds which requires immediate repair. The repair work will be undertaken tomorrow and will require water to be cut off for a significant period of time. Closure of the school is in keeping with health and safety requirements which require a school to be closed if water is to be shut off for more than two hours.

The Year 9 Whanau Welcome BBQ will not go ahead Tuesday 11 February 2020.

Normal timetable is expected to resume Wednesday 12 February 2020. Please check the College’s Facebook page or website for further updates incase the school is required to be closed for additional time.

We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your co-operation.

Principal

Swimming Sports 2020

Swimming Sports will be held on Thursday 13 February 2020 at the Lido.

Competitive events will take place from 9am. These events are optional. Only students who have registered in competitive races will attend the morning events. Competitors must make their own way to the pool by 8.45am sharp. Students who are not participating in the competitive events will attend school in the morning as per normal.

The full school will attend from 1pm to 3pm (weather permitting). On this afternoon, form teachers will walk with their classes to the pool. Students who are not competitors can participate in the inter-house tabloid competition. These are fun events and attract many entries. We encourage students to participate in as many of these events as possible as all entries gain points for the inter-house competition.

Students will be dismissed from the pool at 2.50pm to return to school or make their way home.

Dress Code:
• Students must wear mufti (no cost)
• Clothing must be in keeping with house colours and suitable for both sunny and cold conditions
• Competitive swimmers must bring swimming togs, at least two towels and warm clothing in case it gets cold
• Those students entering tabloids events must bring suitable swimwear - jeans are not permitted
• All students must come prepared with sunscreen, a sun hat and a drink bottle of water
• There will be limited food sales available

Bad weather may mean the full school will not attend in the afternoon. If this is the case normal classes will continue for those students not competing in the finals.

Year 9 Health Assessments

The School Based Health Service (SBHS) is a national health programme being offered in a number of secondary schools throughout the country. It promotes and supports student’s well-being in order to improve their learning, school performance and overall development.

A component of the SBHS programme is a free health check for all Year 9 students and to other students as required. The health check includes a general well-being Health Assessment (HEADSSS) and hearing and vision testing. The HEADSSS questionnaire can be viewed on the Awatapu College website. A generalist nurse lead health clinic service is provided. Students can arrange an appointment time to see the nurse about any health problem or concern that they may have. Parent contact is always welcome.

Any information gained during these assessments is confidential. No other person inside or outside the school will have access to your young person’s information unless they are at risk of harm.

If you DO NOT want your child to have the general health check, please complete the opt out form (available on the College website) and return to the school office before 12 February 2020, addressed to the Public Health Nurse.

To speak to us about your child’s health, please contact the nurse through Awatapu College or Jan Guppy (Clinical Nurse Manager) on 06 350 4560.
