Notification of School Closure

Due to conditions caused by the remnants of Cyclone Debbie, the decision has been made to close Awatapu College on Thursday, 6 April 2017. This decision has been taken in conjunction with advice sought from Horizons Regional Council.

Of concern is potential flooding from the rising levels of the Manawatu River which runs adjacent to the College. Our current information is that another weather bomb is likely later tonight which could further increase the chances of flooding. As well as the dangers of flooding, there is also the situation of the safety of staff and students travelling to and from school.  Already, a number of staff and students have been adversely affected by the weather situation.

As the school will be closed to all students and staff, the following will be cancelled tomorrow:

  • All classes, including the 400 block
  • The Year 12 RYDA Driver Education programme
  • The Year 10 Social Studies trip
  • All sports practices
  • The Soiree
  • Gateway and Work Experience

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however, the safety of students and staff is of paramount importance. It is envisaged at this stage the College will reopen on Friday, 7 April 2017.  Any potential change to Friday’s arrangements will be posted to the College’s Facebook page and Website.
